Project Presentation
"Senioren ans Netz" (Introducing senior citizens to the Internet)
Pupils at two "Gymnasien" (equivalent to grammar schools) in Leipzig first taught senior citizens how to handle multimedia and the Internet on computers in 1997. The success of that pilot project lead to further courses being conducted in the following years. The aim of the courses was to promote media and social expertise across the generations. Thanks to support from the state government of Saxony, it was possible to set up a regional network that now comprises 60 schools - with the project being partly conducted independently by companies run by pupils. Long-term effects can also be seen in the increasing number of Internet clubs, cafes, etc. for senior citizens that are set up by graduates of the courses. The mentor and adviser of the resulting intergenerational networks is the Verband Sächsischer Bildungsinstitute e.V. (Association of Saxon Educational Institutions) and its members in association with Leipzig University and IT companies.
