MediaWest Media West is the first neighbourhood media centre of the Netherlands. Their aim is to make (new) media accessible for socially disadvantaged groups. Through video and TV productions, the internet and (web)radio, they not only make the inhabitants of the Utrecht West neighbourhood, of very mixed ethnic backgrounds, familiar with media, but also stimulate the communication between the various groups and with the authorities. What Internet is concerned, one cannot only use computers free of charge at the Media West Centre, but also get practical advice and assistance. Furthermore, Media West employs 5 web designers in the framework of a labour market integration project, who build web sites for neighbourhood inhabitants and for all kinds of organisations. One can get consultancy or place an order for a concrete web site with them. The newest Media West project is called "Webmedia" and makes it possible for the inhabitants to also produce information. With simple digital equipment, they can produce video sequences on life in the neighbourhood, that are made available on the web.
