Project Presentation
Public Library of the Klaipeda Municipality - Centre of Information, Self-Education and Culture
The public library in Klaipeda, Lithuania's third-largest city, is well aware of the vital importance of information technology and learning how to deal with new media. As part of a modernisation process, both real and virtual information and educational centres have been created for visitors. The library set up a room for Internet access in 1998, and a media centre for children was established in the following year. Special courses are also available for children with disabilities. The number of young readers has experienced a boom, demonstrating the close relationship between Internet access and the winning over of new target groups. The library's consultants include teachers, the Youth Protection Office, and organisations for the disabled. This year, the "Stockholm Challenge Award 2001" was awarded to the library for its commitment and IT programme.
