Internet-Cafes Nordrhein-Westfalen
Job centres in North Rhine-Westphalia first set up Internet cafes run by commissioned educational institutions in 1997. Since their introduction they have increased in number from the original 14 to currently more than 50. The aim is to introduce young underachievers to the new technology and familiarise them with the Internet as part of the job selection process.
In the mornings the Internet cafes are used as classrooms for job training purposes. They are also open to young people in the afternoon until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. and at the weekends. The sessions are run by experts in social pedagogy who have experience in youth employment and possess the necessary IT skills. This ensures that a certain target group, which often cannot be reached using conventional methods, is addressed. The contents of the teaching programme include basic understanding of the Internet and its range of applications, the ability to carry out research using the Web, current practical know-how, and much more. Certificates are presented documenting experience gained. Some EDP training sessions for young women are also carried out separately. One group has already successfully presented its modern media capabilities at TOP - the women's trade fair in Düsseldorf (June '97).
The initiative is financed by the Bundesanstalt für Arbeit (Federal Employment Office), with contributions from national and state governments, local authorities and the EU.
